I am so curious about it, and I am also kind of scared because I have heard people say that it hurts. I could use some information or anything from people who have had or given physical therapy if you are a doctor. Thanks. :)

I tore my ACL, had knee surgery (knee cap was displaced and facing the side) and had shoulder sugery. I have done a lot of physical therapy. The first visit is the easiest... they take all your medical records and they start you on some exercises and give you some exercises to do at home. Starting the 2nd visit you will do more intense exercises (depending on how serious your injury is) and maybe use the machines. It just kinda goes like that for a while. Yea... it can hurt but that is only because it is strengthening your muscles again or teaching them how to work again. Like, when i had to do my knee surgery... we had to re-teach my leg how to bend and walk properly because when they did the surgery... they found that some nerves and other things were damaged.
Don't be scared!! Physical Therapists are nice... they are here to help you. People get so scared to go but, it isn't bad at all!! If you do feel pain... PLEASE let the therapist know. Then you can explain it and they can see if it is getting worse or if it is just your muscle building itself back. The first session is usually about 45-1 hour. and the rest from then on are about 30-45 mins, depending on why you are there. Between exercises... like if you have to do 3 sets of 20.. please rest between each set!!
Physical therapy isn't bad at all and it will help you if you do it correctly. You need to do the exercises they give you to do at home (in my case... hospital room) but... that is a thing you need to make sure you do or else.. it won't help at all. If physical therapy doesn't help then let the therapist know and let your doctor know. Wait atleast 3-4 weeks until you know if it helping or not.
Good Luck!! E-mail me if you have any other questions lilmissfess92@yahoo.com

The first visit will be about collecting data, developing goals, and establishing a treatment plan. The therapist will conduct and interview, observe your posture, strength, flexibility etc. Unless you have had surgery, they will also do special testing to assess what structures may be injured. The first day may include some maneuvers that will be painful or uncomfortable, but it is not necessarily "the goal" every session to "hurt" you.

Once a treatment program has been established, it may include exercise, stretching, modailities (such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation, etc or a variety of other techniques. Most of these are done in accordance with your pain levels. However, if you have had a procedure such as surgery...some pain will be unavoidable...especially if you are trying to regain flexibility. Yet, in those cases, some type of pain reducing modality is usually also used.

Good luck

I've had physical therapy on several occasions for my knee (3 surgeries). It all depends on what's being done. They usually did treatments on me first, either stim or ultra sound. That didn't hurt at all. After that I would do strengthening exercises. If it hurts let you therapist know and they will adjust your routine to better work with you. It's not bad and helps a lot in the long run!

I have had 6 knee surgeries, and constantly have paint. Although the therapy may hurt, it will help in the long run.
I am not going to lie, most of the time I feel like crying, but it really has helped strengthen my knee. It doesnt give out as much, and I am not falling anymore.
Give it a try. They will work with you, and to what you can handle.

It all depends on the reason why you are going, what is your injury? Therapy will strengthen the muscles around your knee, and also will help you control pain with various modalities, such as e-stim, ultrasound, heat or ice....

After injuring my knee in a skateboard accident my doctor advised leg extensions with light weight and high reps. Yes it was painful ,but considering the alternative(an injury that,if left alone, would leave me with a limp) it was worth the effort.
