I used to get shin splints when I was on the track team in high school. The team trainer told me to walk sometimes with my toes pointed inward. You get shin splints because of a mechanical defect in the way you run. Walking ' pigeon toed' can help correct that. If you have them very badly, alternate ice packs and moist heat every 5 minutes for 1 hour twice daily. After a meet on a Friday I was in severe pain so I did this all weekend and I felt much better Monday at practice.

You won't get shin splints if you remember to always do a series of stretches before you run or walk. I had to learn the hard way, but now, with the stretching before walking, I have no more shin splints.

Did you get them from jogging or running on a hard surface? If so, then I'd suggest rest for about a week along with hot baths or soaks. Later you can begin to jog or run on a softer surface. Grass is good; a rubberized track is better than asphalt and asphalt is a lot better than concrete. If you got them some other way, I don't know what to do. Good luck. We all know they hurt a lot/

I've had them before. if you have flat feet, get orthotics. otherwise, ice and massage your shins after you exercise. try not to do excessive running. Advil or Aleve work if you need a pain reliever.
