I'm going to AF Basic hopefully around July and I want to know if I'm going to be required to wear BC's there. I do wear glasses only when I have to read far away, such as reading the board at school. But I see fine without them. In Fact , I don't even wear them at all, unless I really need to read distance. What's the vision requirements not to have to wear BC's?

No one is going to force you to wear them. They will issue you to them, but my experience (and those of many of my other spectacled friends) was that my TI didn't care... if you can see without them and don't want to wear them all the time, then don't. :)

EDIT: In the Air Force, they don't care about what kind of vision correction you use once you leave Basic Training. (I even managed to wear my contacts half the time in Basic!) Once you are done and go to tech school and your permanent duty station, you can get rid of them! (I turned mine in to the Optometry clinic so they can "recycle" them). Also, as was said, military members are authorized to get corrective surgery free of cost, however, your commander must approve it and (obviously) you must be a suitable candidate for the surgery (the clinic can tell you this once you get to your permament station).

You will probably have to wear glasses at basic. After that, if there's still an issue you can get contacts or Lasik with no problem. Your vision will be tested and corrected and paid for by the government. And there's no problem looking like that in boot camp. You will be judged on much different criteria than looks.

By the way people, the "birth control glasses" are the glasses with the thick black horn rims. They make you look so nerdy/different the forces' joke about them, saying they are a form of birth control since no one would go out with a man/woman who wears them. I don't know about you, but if I want to get intimate with a fine protector of our country, I will take the glasses off during the kissing! =)

For those who don't know, they are called birth control glasses because the military issue glasses are very unattractive. If your intake vision test says you need glasses, you will have to use the standard issue glasses. Sorry, but it's way better to be able to see in a pair of ugly glasses than to get caught off guard by something when you're in the military. Best of luck to you!

BCG's Birth Control Glass, also know as RPG's Rape Prevention Glasses are nicknames given for the horribly unattractive glasses that are issued by the military.
I cannot say for the USAF, but in the ARmy if you are issued glasses you must wear them. I only needed them for extreme distance, such as rifle qualification. I did get away with just wearing them when I was firing.

If you have to wear them in civilan life, you will have to wear them in basic. No contacts to half way through tech school, sometimes untill you have finished tech. A better name that most jarheads call them is.. beat me, **** me. You probably wont come across that in the air force though. Word of advice in basic, listen up and try hard and you will be just fine.

LOL! I haven't heard THAT term in a long time! My dad is in his 70's and he's the one that used to use that term when HE was in the Air Force. My brother was in the AF until about 199-something or other. And yes, he also had to wear BC's, and he also called them that.

The term comes from the fact that they are considered so unattractive (thick, plastic, black frames), that no one would want to date you, much less want to have sex with you.

Personally, I just consider them "geek" glasses. They make you look very studious and scientist-ish.

you might, they'll give you an eye test and determine whether you'll need to wear them, don't worry about it, your sure not going to worry about what you look like in basic training
