don't get a dog - it's obvious you're clueless about what is involved. Save yourself and the dog a lot of problems and get a pet rock.

Springfield has animal shelters - look in the phone directory. If you go to an animal shelter you might have to pay a small adoption fee (in some places in the US it is around $5-10, might be more or less there). I know you can get a good lab at the shelter - labs and lab mixes seem to be abundant right now.
Lab rescues would probably cost you more. From $60 and up I would hazard. You get a quality dog however and sometimes they even have the papers.
There are also some excellent breeders around the area. This option is the most expensive, but you'll definitely get papers and will most likely get to pick the pup of your choice. Averages $300 and up I would guess.
ETA - Angie, you have no clue child. Labs are very intelligent and hard working dogs. You can teach them to do just about anything. That's why they are so commonly used by police, fire dept, army, service animals, etc.

You can go on line to find shelters and adoption places close to you.Yes,there is a fee for adopting from an adoption shelter. Some time a lot some time a little. But Labs are wonderful dogs.I have 3 Labs. I have had all since they were 6 weeks old. They are 7 , 6 , and 4. They are very smart and easy to train. But BIG!!! They need room to run..Although mine are house dogs they have 5 fenced acres to play. They are Loyal and wonderful with small children. I will have more if anything ever happens to these. I don't know what my life would be with out them.

Look in your yellow pages in the back of your phone book. Usually a dog from an animal shelter will cost between 100-200 dollars, my cat was $85 from a shelter. There are fees, just like if you were to buy a dog from a breeder, they are just cheaper, and damaged. I suggest you look in the yellow pages or ask an animal hopital about any local adoption facilities. If you want to save an animal, you wont mind paying for it. Do your research and before you agree to the animal you want ask why its there and if it has any medical problems. My suggestion, ultimately, is dont adopt animals, buy and train your own.

here is the problem .. Most shelter dogs are 2nd owner. Lab's especially are a lot of energy and work. A mentally damaged lab can be a real problem if you aren't prepared for it.
Check out Lab Rescue. Many people surrender labs to rescues.. I've got a Yellow Lab who is a hoot to be around. good natured farm raised and a goofball.
My guess you can find labs all the way from Arkansas to KCMO. I am guessing you'd be able to find a farm raised dog around Tablerock or Bull Shoals

There is always a fee or "donation". Plus you will need to take him / her to vet with in a week.
Labs are the greatest dogs on earth.

I'm not really sure of why people want labs. In my opinion, they have a lot of health problems and aren't that intelligent. They are lovey-dovey though, but sloppy and drooly and shed a LOT. My recommendation, if you are REALLY REALLY set on a lab - ok! But get a lab MIX. It will be cheaper for you to not have to deal with the health problems, and you might find a shorter haired dog that will make housekeeping easier. Just my humble opinion! I really don't like breeds. I like mixes.
