Nutrition purists claim that white potatoes (the kind we like to bake and turn into french fries and potato chips so often) aren't good for you because all they provide for the diet is high-glycemic starch.

Compared to other foods, white potatos are not great.

First of all, most of the vitamins are in the peel and most people remove the peel. Then people boil them which leaches out most of the remaining nutrients.

Furthermore, most people slather cream, butter, sour cream and bacon bits on potatos, which all have too much saturated fat. Or we deep-fry them.

Lastly, the potato provides a lot of high-glycemic carbs that convert to blood sugar quickly and are not good for a regulated metabolism.

So overall potatos should be pretty low on your food choice list if you care about your body.

It's at least a whole natural food - assuming you're talking about a plain baked potato and the like. They are just simple carbs with very little nutritional content, so that's why they may be considered bad. Sweet potatoes have a lot more vitamins in them.

White potatoes are good for you but sweet potatos are better. Carb foods with color are generally better for you than white carb foods. This is true for potatos, rice, and bread. The colored carb foods have more complex carbs in them.
