Sometimes eating something that irritates your intestines and colon will cause shreds of mucus to appear; I notice that with irritable bowel syndrome. You may also see mucus in your stool if you're swallowing a lot of thick phlegm with a cold or allergies. In fact, it's normal to have small amounts of mucus in your stool, but probably not enough to see.

On the other hand, you could have a bacterial infection, ulcerative colitis, even a bowel obstruction if you're seeing a lot of or frequent mucus. If you continue to see it over the next few days, make an appointment with your doctor, who can order the proper tests.

Anytime you attempt to self-diagnose, you put yourself and your health at great risk. If the ER doctor said you needed to see a GI, why would you not go? Especially if you desire a true diagnosis and plan of care. Just because you felt better, does not mean the problem is not still there. There are several very serious problems that may not be "active" all the time and it is possible that what you eat and drink could help or hinder the situation along with your level of activity. Do yourself a favor and get a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan from a professional. Asking questions on Yahoo is definitely fun, but this could be very serious and should be attended to by a physician.

if you hane been constipated for a long period of time and recently had a very good motion the mucas may be the tale end of this, or say you have had diarohea or used a liquid based suppostory.
the best bet is to go and see your doctor to rule out any problems or maybe a change in your diet. Im sure it wont be anything to sinister and dont worry about the embrassment factor they had heard and seen it all before.

Mucous is not normal in a bowel movement, and can mean anything from a simple bug, to an inflammatory bowel disease, such as crohns or colitis.

If it persists see your doc

It is not dangerous, it is a symptom rather than the problem. It can occur in infections usually with accompanying diarrhoea. It can also occur in colitis, with or without blood. It is also sometimes a feature of patients with bowel tumours.

If this is occurring see a doctor to start investigation.

If it happens once or twice then it is nothing to worry about but if it happening every bowel movement then you should see your GP,so he can put your mind at ease.

I'm pretty sure it's not normal; sounds like it could be related to some sort of stomach problem-- an ulcer maybe? You should go see a doctor... that sounds bad.
