Even though most of the airline have lowered their fares to Europe . I personally think its safer to stay in the US or South America.. until this stupid war is over with.

The best way to start is make a list of places you want to go.See a travel agent you know or has been recommended by a friend who has had good results with the agency.Figure out a budget, and start a savings account for future trips. The cheapest way is in a group or on a cruise ship. I prefer cruises because you unpack one time and the ship sails and you have all your meals included, and you sleep in the same bed,you make new friends, and are safe with the cruise line tours. No where is safe these days..but I would go where the cruise lines go..staying away from Saudi Arabia, some parts of Africa,Phillipines, etc. We have a little thing called terrorism these days and it roars its ugly head wherever it see's fit.Pack lightly..with wash and wear..there are laundry mats on most cruise vessels..if not there is a laundry service.Start small with a short trip, maybe the Carribean,or mexico,Alaska. Then go maybe to South America,Europe.

Decide where you want to go first. Once you've done that, the next step is to decide for how long. Then, start thinking about financing the trip. Create a budgeting sheet and decide how much you can save each month and how long it will take you to save enough. Read the Lonely Planet books on your destination(s). There's a wealth of information in those books for the budget-minded traveller. Research the price of your plane ticket. The earlier you buy it, the cheaper it will be. If you are a student, DEFINITELY get an ISIC (International Student Identity Card) - this will save you money on anything from lodging to airfare at statravel.com.
If you are going to be backpacking - hostels are the best way to go. You meet a ton of great people from all over the world and they can be a really great resource for things to see and do in the area - plus, they're the cheapest form of lodging possible. You just have to get used to sharing a room with strangers :-)
Many people work in the country they're visiting to finance their travels. Work Exchange programs like BUNAC or Council Exchange are great for this and provide you with valuable resources on employment, long-term lodging, and any legal matters you may have to consider, such as getting a passport, visas, and immunizations.
If you will be visiting multiple countries, consider getting an around-the-world ticket. This allows multiple stops in one direction over the course of a year.

1. Where is somewhere you've always wanted to go
2. Go to a travel agent and ask questions.
If you like the service and the seem to give you lots of information (compare it to information from the internet and travel guides on the area) book a flight and places to stay and go!
If it's your first time travelling on your own, think about joining a tour group like Contiki and they'll give a good general trip in whatever country you're in.

Get a bike and bags and roam europe, camping out. You can camp for free just about anywhere, and you'll be quite safe in any western european country. Great bike paths in germany, holland, belgium. Take a friend!
I go every year to germany and ireland biking and love it.
If you get to southeast asia, everything is ridiculously cheap. Only the ticket will hit you. Thailand, laos and malaysia are easy and safe and interesting.
