first you have to be more persistant than they are, hard i know. a spray bottle is a good idea, it that seams to not effect it then add a touch of lemon juice and i mean a touch. they should respond unfavorable.. then and this is the most important part after it is quite for even a short time give it a treat and say good dog with lots of praise.... if it barks again spray it again. If there is something in particular that causes it to bark, do it repeatdly. spraying when it barks and giving a treat when its quite. as time goes on make the duration from quite to treat longer and longer eventually, no yapping as you put it. also when you spray use a command and everyone in the house must use the same command. and it should be one sylable (sp). like quite or stop say it firm and gruff. some even say giving a grunt noise is effective, similiar to a dog growl.
someone above said give a treat to the dog to smell when it barks , thats a horible idea all that is doing is training the dog to bark, because lo and behold here come food yay!!! lets bark more. another bad thing to do, is pick it up or give it favorable attention when it mis behaves, that only encourages continuance.

One of my two Yorkies is a yapper for certain occasions. He yaps when he hears or sees somebody out in the main road when we let the dogs down into yard outside our front door. He will also yap when going down the stairs to the door.
Disregarding some of the totally offensive answers to your question, I have always believed in the good firm 'NO!' command. We also keep a rolled-up piece of newspaper at the foot of the staircase; the very threat of, 'I'll fetch the newspaper!' usually shuts him up. Yes, Lenny still yaps, when he can, but we always manage to stop him from persisting with these firm commands. It is a fact that these smaller breeds tend to yap, probably out of the need to protect themselves and, most likely, their owners as well!
I would suggest to persist with exercising your authority; certainly NO shock collars, water pistols, or anything which could cause harm to your little dog.

I've heard that nothing can stop a dog from barking once it picks up the habit. You can drug the dog - there is something called Clomicalm that is a light tranquilizer that makes them less inclined to bark - or have their vocal cords surgically severed (which I think is cruel), but - you're kind of stuck with the yapping once it begins otherwise.

First off the shock collars are cruel!!
You can by an air can from the pet shop, and everytime it yaps at someone spray it at the dogs face, it dont hurt just scares them with persistance they will stop.

oh man... be watching this question with interest!!! we've got 1 too... wonderful little girl but that yap just goes right thru u!
Although if u have watched "its me or the dog" with Victoria Stillwell, she suggests keeping a tasty treat always handy. then when the dog starts barking, thrust the treat under their nose. they cant bark and sniff at the same time. then when they have stopped barking give the treat. repeat till problem solved. sounds easy but i just never seem to get round to doing it, but if its like everything else that Victoria does then i bet it works.

I have a friend who has the same problem my advice is to get a barkbuster collar. Sometimes called a bark control collar if you do a search on the net there are loads at different costs. The comments from people that have used them are said to be good

if your Yorkie has got into the habit of barking you need to get it to associate the barking with something negative, one of the best ways is with a water gun or just with a cup of water. it might sound crazy but try this when the dog just starts to bark[not any later] you hit it with the water and shout no! it works by the dog thinking bark-water-drenched-unpleasant, give it a few times until the dog cottons and the habit of just barking is broken ,believe me it does work

most of the time dogs don't bark for no reason. Your dogs needs proper training and stimulating toys and more exercise. It should also be spayed or neutered.
There is a chance that there is nothing you can do that will make it stop. If you didn't want a yappy dog, you shouldn't have got a yappy breed.
