rub with the TIPS of the fingers - NO NAILS!
protect the scalp - but enjoy the massage - all over
helps oxygen get to the roots

it all depends on the type of hair, curly, straight,
thin, thick
sorry I don't know what different massages they
do, but I do know they use different kinds

at home or at a salon with a shampoo bowl?
i can tell you 'how to' , but i need to know where it will be done. the hand placement is different on each.
are you right or left handed?

That's my favorite thing about getting a hair cut. Any place you go to get your hair cut could do that for you. Just tell them if they take their time you'll give them a good tip.
