Here is the situation. I live a mile from a major U.S. highway, yet I cannot get a Broadband connection. Yes it is kind of in the country, but should that actually matter? We deal with Verizon, whom does our dialup connection, but it is terrible at best. Verizon does not offer DSL for our location. Hughes net is too expensive, so that is not the answer. Am I stuck with dialup until I move? What is the best way to deal with this problem? If Verizon can't service us, does that mean other phone companies cannot?

1- DSL is possible with fiber optic lines, but the equiptment was too expensive for verizon to invest in, as it wouldnt provide much of a profit margin, so if your phone line is on a fiber line and not copper you are SOL

2- if the condition of the outside wiring is not sufficient, or you are not within the recommended distance from the central office DSL will not work and therefore you are SOL

3- DSL requires special equiptment installed in the central office, and Verizon may feel that your location will not provide enough revenue to install this equiptment at that location - however Covad, or another DSL provider MAY feel that there is sufficient revenue in your area, and may have installed there own DSL bank at your local CO, so check with other local DSL providers in your area...

4- you may be able to get FiOS in your area, which is much better then DSL, if VZ upgraded your area to FiOS, they may have felt that it wasnt economical for them to add FiOS and DSL, check with Verizon to see if FiOS is avalible in your area

5- check your cable company, they may provide cablemodem service...

6- if satellite HSI is too expensive then the option of a fractional T-1 will proballay also be too expensive, but is another option, as is ISDN, both provided by Verizon..

If Verizon does not provide DSL, it's unlikely that other phone companies will. Why? Because the lines (which Verizon owns, even if other companies are providing service over them) are not upgraded to support DSL. This is the case in my area and I live in a tech-heavy close-in suburb of a major city. Nothing you can do about that.

Cable is a choice, if you have that (or is that what Hughes is?). Satellite may also be an option, although expensive.

However, your best option, if available in your area, is cellular. Companies like Sprint offer high-speed wireless data networks. They are faster than dial-up and have the benefit of working anywhere that there is Sprint (or whoever) service, so you can take it with you (if you have a laptop).

You have to have high speed lines in your area to be able to use it. I had a boss that bought his own fiber optic cable (It's much cheaper now days) and ran his own line.

They have been working on a new technology where they have found that they can send internet through your power lines and don't need a phone line. The power is not at all affected and neither is the internet service! Just think, you can someday just plug into an outlet anywhere and hook up to the net! Of Course, the phone companies do not like this idea at all.

Of all of the issues that America faces in nowadays and time , this isn't one in all them !! Christians have needed to submit with the Liberal Bias` Socialist Media that has absolutely ruled "ALL" media shops for a long time !! If the listeners have an interest , they'll pay attention , if they don't seem to be , they gained`t . Also; Unlike the most important liberal bias` networks , I`m certain those men and women gained`t be at the radio 24 / 7 ! I`ll take a few well information each time as a substitute than the gloom and doom of the Bias` Media that dominates the airwaves in these days !

Check with the cable companies. They are more expensive than dial up and DSL but cheaper than Hughes.

If Verizon cannot provide DSL, check with AT&T, but it's unlikely.
