Pins and needles are called parasthesias. They occur when the nerve is compressed or compromised in some way. They are usually reversible when the pressure on the nerve stops. There are other ways to get parasthesias such as diabetic neuropathy, CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome), certain vitamin deficiencies, tertiary syphilis, etc.
