Oh no, get a regular bed. In the long run you're son will be happier. Sofa beds are more for a temporary use, like a sleep over, etc...

Sofa beds are not meant to be used as normal beds but when my son lived in a bedsit he didnt have room for a sofa and a bed so he used his sofa bed every night for three years and he said it was really comfortable

Between the two, I would choose a regular bed. But there are other double duty items that might meet your needs.

A futon, daybed, a lofted bed with functional space for desk or storage underneath, a flipdown bed, similar to a murphy/wall bed only it isn't in the wall...or a bed that IS in the wall. You could get a trundle bed, he gets the top and roll out the spare (another real mattress) for guests. You could also do an inflatable guest bed. You could do bunkbeds with a double or queen on the bottom, twin up top. Or you could get him a king size bed to spread out alone and all his buddies tumble in for a sleepover...of course, that may require a little discretion per guest and depending on his age. Son's favorite grandma YES! Son's best buddy down the street YES! All his friends on his birthday...YES! Strange uncle who never got married for some reason...NO! Your old college roommate who is in town on business...NO! On the other hand, giving a guest this large bed for themselves, and giving your son the couch and clicker to the TV for a night or two, or camping him in the backyard as a neat adventure when company is in town...is kind of hospitable to the guest and something out of the ordinary for your son too.

All these have their ups and downs...some literally with all the levers and conversions. They won't all be a right choice for you. But that at least is a few more things to consider to save space without losing sleep.

When I was a teenager I persuaded my Mum to let me have a sofa bed but it did nothing but cause arguements. She wanted me to clear it away every morning and I wanted to leave it out. They're pretty comfy to sleep on but just make sure you're happy for it to never look like a sofa!!!

Definately a normal bed as sofa beds are no where near as comfortable and I cant see them lasting as long

To be honest, I have never slept on a comfortable sofa bed. I don't think a mattress performs well after being "folded up" for any lengh of time. I would not dream of sleeping on one for any more than a few nights. I shudder to think what it would do to my back. A child might not care however. Another reason I dislike sofabeds is they are soooo heavy to move! If you don't mind throwing out your back every time you need to move it....go for it!
