My daughter is now 13 months old, we have had an alarm for all the children. When she was tiny, it used to go off quite a bit, she would move off the sensor pad or hold her breath. I took her to the Doc and he said she's fine - no health problems.
As she's gotten older, I have switched the alarm on by habit really. It hasn't gone off since......I cant' remember, it's so long.
In the early hours of this morning, the alarm sounded on two occasions. I ran to my baby and put my hand on her chest to check, and both times, she just calmly took a breath in and was fine after that.
I am 'On Pins' now. Why did that happen? Will she do it again?
I thought that as her body matured, it wouldn't happen unless there was something wrong.
Can anybody help with an explanation?

The monitor can be going off because of loose leads or because your baby is actually experiencing apnea - which is probably why you have the monitor in the first place. Your monitor should have a light that blinks telling you if it is loose lead, apnea, or low heart rate. Also, your monitor can be downloaded at the place who supplied it to see what the problem was. SIDS most certainly can happen after a year, especially for a baby who already has a history of apnea or prematurity. Be sure to tell the Pediatrician about the alarms. He needs to know to make a good decision on when to discontinue its use.

she probably moved off the sensor or maybe she buried her head in her blankie or something. She is passed the age of SIDS since she is over a year old. She might just wanted to be off the pad b/c it was uncomfortable...If you are still worried or if it continues to go off even after u check and she's ok, then maybe the sensor pad is old and defective.

Dont Worry So Much. As A Mom thats kinda hard to do ,but she is fine ... Relax> I think u may just need a BIG BREAK

You know, those monitors aren't as good as people think. They have malfunctions and then the parents are frightened. I had a baby die of SIDS and I had another baby after that. I asked the doctor if she thought that I should get one of those and she said it's a really bad idea because they go off often for no reason. I didn't get one. I just woke up constantly to check my baby. Your daughter could just be moving around and set it off. There's many reasons why they go off. Rarely is it because the child has stopped breathing. Relax...your daughter is fine. If you are concered take her to the doctor just for a check up.

Please try and relax.... your little girl will probably feel you stressing like mad ;-) But I completely understand how you feel, I sometimes go and check on my 3 months old little girl to make sure she's breathing OK, just scared of cot death, like most mums!!
I would tend to agree with others, maybe she has sleep apnea. Maybe that's something you should explore with your GP, because even if it's nothing on a daily basis it could have some long term side effects...
My boyfriend has sleep apnea and it's freaky 'cos he'll suddenly hold his breath and then, a few seconds later he'll breathe out... but those seconds do seem like hours....
Scary but not lethal, so try not to worry yourself too much ;-)

you might find your daughter is not stopping breathing at all but the monitor failing to pick up any movement, we had the angel care monitor with out daughter (2004) and when she was tiny it hardly ever went off but as she was getting older it went off more and more, the breathing monitor is more suited to moses baskets than cots and you are expecting a little pad on a big cot to pick up every movement without any fail....
ours used go off loads of times a night as she got older so we stopped using it as it was waking her up as well as us and our panic levels were through the roof. the older they are the more active they are. I think its time you put that alarm away the risk to your daughter isnt big as she is over 1 and if she is healthy it gives you less reason to worry. we stopped using ours when our daughter was 15 months old.

There a chance she could of just moved off the senor mat.

I still have one on my sons who is 19 mths and its just habbit I turn it on,

It has happened to me once and I found that the wire thats plugged into the monitor had come out a little as my son must have been touching it.

When we were kids, my younger sister used to do this and my mum had to run her under an ice cold tap to get her to breathe. Sorry I can't be more helpful but the point I am making is to stay alert until she goes through this stage. It will pass , but obviously I can't predict the consequences of failure as my mum managed to keep my sister alive.

The child is still very young and thier minds are still developing. So thier brain actually forgets to breathe.
