Usually when the lymph cells are elevated it is a sign of infection and mono could very well be the problem. My son had mono in elementary school. It isn't deadly but it will make you very tired and you will have to avoid physical exertion and antibiotics that cause other problems with mononucleosis.

When it comes to an infection it could be a lot of things. The doctor must have his reasons for suspecting mono by other symptoms or his exam.

Symptoms I got offline include:

Fever
Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck and armpit
General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
Drowsiness
Loss of appetite
Muscle aches or stiffness
Swollen spleen
Rash
Less frequently occurring symptoms include:

Jaundice (yellow cast to skin)
Headache
Neck stiffness
Sensitivity to light
Cough
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Rapid heart rate
Fatigue
Nosebleed
Hives

Read the link below to understand all about infectious mononucleosis. It is contagious and anyone who has been around you has already been exposed but make sure no one eats or drinks after you. Spray Lysol to help kill germs, wash hands often, cover your mouth when coughing, and rest!

Generally when lymphs are high there is some systemic toxicity, usually viral. Starting with a mono test is reasonable because it is a common cause.
