It violates trust. Of course, the seriousness of the lie relies on several factors, and some lies are excusable - if lying prevents a murder, most people would say, "Lie!" Some people don't want to hear the truth - "I am not a racist!" or "I do Not have a problem with drinking!" In addition there are such things as social fictions, which everyone accepts ("There's a bug going around so that's why I called in today"), and grand lies, such as "America has a perfectly just society." Ordinary fibs such as "I don't think you're fat at all!" can eliminate a lot of friction and possibly save relationships.
Having said all that, most people would still agree that lying as a general policy is bad. People rely on people to be truthful about things that matter.

The most harm a lie does is to the liar.
It makes you guilty, and suspect.
What a tangled web we weave when we practice to decieve.
IN other words, once you start, until you tell the truth, you'l lhave to keep lying.

First and foremost, and you know this, lying is a sin against our God. Secondly it erodes a persons credibility, and produces a false sense of friendships. In my experience as a liar and being lied to; a lie always, always comes back to bite the person who uttered it.

Lies may hurt someone's feelings and make someone feel upset with you or about themselves. You may also get in trouble if you were the one who told it. Lies ruin friendships and people's trust in you. Don't tell any lies unless you want this to happen!!
