They gave my grandmother a pass to go home in Canada for an infection in her organs. They put her on a waiting list. They said she was all right to go home and relax. She came to the US and they told her if she would have waited one more weekend she would have not been with us today.Lucky for her and us she had the surgery in the US and she is still with us today. It really makes me wonder if we really need health care that will put us on a waiting list even though some of us have worked are arss's off to be able to walk in and pay for the best.

That seems to be a common concern of people who come from places with government controlled health care. Makes me wonder if we need it too. But we do need something to control the skyrocketing costs of health care.

It is classic supply and demand. If you lower the cost of something to near zero - i.e. medical care - the demand will go way up. Most nationalized medical systems, like Canada's, don't seem to be prepared to employ and pay the vast number of doctors and nurses it takes to consult with everyone, so the system becomes clogged and it is hard to weed out the truly needy from the ones whose only complaint is a runny nose.

The flip side is the US system, where you can get all the care you want, when you want it - but sometimes only if you can pay up.

I'm happy your grandmother got the care she needed and is still around.

I have to say, I prefer the US system. It is more innovative and responsive - it comes out ahead for me on the pro/con list, more than the nationalized systems.

If anyone has a good recipe for universal health care, which is a fine and admirable goal, I'd love to hear it. I've thought a lot about it, and can't come up with anything.

I'm sorry but i don't agree I'm from the UK now living in the USA and the health care i received for the 30 years i lived in the UK was far Superior to that of the USA i find the doctors over here uncaring they only think about the money and you always wait forever because the doctors are running behind the UK national health is far more advanced than Canada's its ridiculous that you even have to pay to have a baby in the USA even with good health care you still receive a bill of nearly two thousand dollars i feel sorry for the people of the usa who end up in debt because a child or family member is seriously ill

I'm against socialized medicine in any form.

When I get in an accident and my arm is hanging on by a micrometer of skin, my bones are shattered, my head is caved in (and, being a guy, you know, I'm insisting it's just a sprain!)...
I don't want to have to wait in line behind someone who's there for a hangnail.

The Feds take enough of my money away every month and give it to people who do not work. They waste it on their own pork barrel projects.

If we had socialized medicine, they'd take even more, give it to even more people who don't work for a living, and I'd quit working because it would be more cost effective to do so.

It's always going to boil down to whoever has the most money will get the best care. I'm not all that thrilled with how it is now but I can only see it worse if they go for a universal program.

I've used this answer before, but it just fits so many questions: If you want the government to run your health care, answer this question: name one, just one, efficiently run gov. program.
Anyone who has dealt with the government on a personal level,i.e. the DMV, the IRS etc...., can tell you just how efficient and personable they are.

If the healthcare systems stays in its current state, only the wealthy will be able to afford it.

Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I'd strongly suggest you guys actually read up on where we're headed, healthcare wise.

It's painfully obvious you're ignorant of the subject, but that still doesn't stop your worthless opinions.

your story reminds me of the true story danzell Washington played in. it's about an American who works his tail off, and when it come time for his son to have a heart transplant his insurance wouldn't cover it. the movie is called john Q. great movie, true story. please watch it. a r explains to him (after he takes over the hospital) how they decide who loves and dies. it's a wake up call to all Americans.
