its a vegetable and it is very bitter, indians eat it they also eat aubergines
i doubt any of you will have heard of it

In the USA, karela = bitter melon.
Popular in Chinese and Filipino cooking.

Yes, I've eaten it at a Chinese restaurant.
Bitter Melon with beef and black bean sauce.

It definitely had a strong taste bitter taste. I think I ate more of the black bean sauce then the bitter melon itself.

Yes, I have heard of it. Its also called karela. Indians eat it fried or baked. Its available at Indian stores or at farmer's markets.

I have heard of it also .... I have had it in mixed curried Indian vegetables with a nice broth / gravy .... it is very good for you, even though it is bitter ..
