Afternoon weddings tend to be less formal than evening weddings. I would think nice khaki pants, a button up shirt, and a tie would do just fine.

You can't go wrong with a nice pair of dress pants and a shirt and tie. Jeans, sandals or shorts, unless such attire is mentioned on the invitation, are never acceptable.
According to weddingchannel.com:
Think "special clothes". Depending on the season, your attire is likely to be lighter colored and a bit more casual that you might wear for an evening wedding. Men should still plan to wear a suit or nice sports coat and slacks, and a tie.
If you are invited to an informal or semi-formal or even a formal daytime wedding, that is, morning, early afternoon or tea time wedding you may wear a dress shirt and slacks and bring a sports jacket.
Take cues from the other guests. If most do not wear sport jackets then it is your option not to wear yours. If the majority does wear jackets, then you are prepared. Either way, don't forget the tie.
If you are invited to a formal daytime an informal or semi-formal evening wedding, wear a suit and tie.

Nice pair of pants ( no jeans or shorts) and a button up shirt. You really do not even need to wear a tie. You do not have to buy a suit unless it is a formal wedding, and even then, I would not waste my money on one. The Bride and groom really just want nice presents, i would not stress that much about what you are wearing.

If it's a formal wedding then I suggest you borrow a suit from a friend.
It doesn't hurt to have a navy blue blazer/sportcoat & kahki pants in your arsenal. It will take you ANYPLACE. Weddings, funerals, dinner, business events, etc.
If it's an informal wedding a nice shirt & tie; (and don't forget the pants)

GO BUY A GOOD SUIT! Because that is exactly what you need to wear. Stop being cheap. Think of it this way....it is an investment and you will use it MORE than one time.

If it isn't a super formal wedding then you would be fine with nice pants and a tie. If it is super formal then I'm afraid you will have to rent a suit or feel terribly underdressed.

It's time to grow up. If you buy one good suit and don't gain a bunch of weight, you can wear it twice a year for a generation.
