Infants and toddlers need a hi fat diet for brain development so they need whole milk[ full fat milk ].
As we grow , we no longer need large amounts of fat .Plus we get fat in other ways in our diet.
Fat free milk is perfect for anyone over age 3. Our brains are already developed.
Great question.

Kids under 2 especially require milk with fat in it to grow properly. If they were nursing, mother's milk has a higher fat content so this is natural for them.

My personal opinion is that totally altering any food is not good. If we eat too much fat in this country, it is because we eat bad fats instead of good (for example-lard-bad, olive oil-good) fats, and we eat far too much of everything. By taking out all the fat we are less satisfied by what we eat, and so we eat much more food, and more calories, than we should. At least, that is my opinion.

It has to do with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins. Kids need the fat to a certain point. After that, low fat or fat free is the way to go to prevent obesity.
