There are all kinds of serious, but rare, side effects - click on the link below to read up on them.

Less serious, but more common, side effects, include the following:

When I took it, it made it hard for me to concentrate, especially on getting words in my head out through my mouth. I could write them OK, but when it came to speaking, all of a sudden my mind went blank. Luckily this goes away after you stop taking it.

Also, I understand it can interfere with seratonin uptake. Your body makes the same amount of it, but for some reason, it seems to bind with the topamax and not as much is available in your blood stream for your body to use. (Serotonin is one of the main neurotransmitters responsible for a "happy" mood, and antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft work by making more of it available to your body). If you are succeptible to depression or are currently on an antidepressant, you may want to discuss this with your doctor as some medications, like Lexapro, work better with topamax than others.

It can also diminish your appetite, cause a little weight loss, and can also cause some constipation.

Hope this helps.

Tingling is the most common side effect and the most common reason why patients discontinue therapy. Other symtoms such as altered taste (carbonated drinks tasting flat) and cognitive dysfunction (memory loss, word finding trouble) are common. Weight loss can occur in up to 1/3 of patients and the higher doses are more likely to cause that. Less prevelent but serious side effects are kidney stones and acute angle glaucoma. The lists that the others gave are much longer, but practically speaking, these are the big ones. Hope it helps.

Common rxns include: dizziness, somnolence (sleepiness, drowsiness), fatigue, nervousness, numbness, memory difficulty, language problems, speech disturbance, ataxia (unsteadiness), anorexia (just meaning that you don't want to eat), nystagmus (your eye twitches when you look to the side for a long time), nausea, depression, concentration difficulty, confusion, diarrhea, mood disturbances, tremor, taste changes, diplopia (seeing double), weight loss, abdominal pain, abnormal vision, insomnia, and anxiety.

There are some more serious reactions that can occur but you'll need to talk to your doc about those.

I found two side effects from it: It makes you lose weight like crazy, and it slowsyour though processes down. (Doctors call it dope-a-max).
200 mg is a high dose. Is that where you are starting??? (I hope not!)
