Male or female it makes a huge difference at that age. For a boy in math usually it is as simple as keeping his mind off girls and friends and doing his homework. For girls, sorry no idea.

I have my kids keep all of their notes along with a couple of practice problems in a spiral notebook. Then, any homework that is graded, should be reviewed. Ask yourself why you missed the problem, did you leave out a step, were you rushing? Your textbook should have extra problems in the back for practice; there should be answers for those as well. Even if you did a couple extra every night, you'd see a big difference.
There are also a lot of great websites that will help you complete practice online. This is important as you will get immediate feedback and understand why you missed something.
If your parents don't mind, you can get a subscription to www.larsonmath.com and track your progress as you practice.
Bottom line, if you spend at least 30 minutes a day practicing, that is doing math homework and extra problems, you will see that things will become much easier for you to retain. (Why do you think teachers are always bugging kids to read 30 minutes every night? LOL)

Best of luck,
Mon :-)

I hear a lot of people saying that math is difficult to study for, but what you can do is practice as many problems as possible in preparation for your test. And don't just leave it for the night before exam time; listen in class and try not to let your thoughts drift if you know that's something you do. Also, take good notes. Copy down every problem you see your teacher writing on the board.

Flash cards!!!!!! Use Flash cards to memorize what an answer might be. Write down as much as you can that your teacher says. Also, I know this sounds insane but ask for extra problems for practice from your teacher, and when your not sure of something, even if theres just alittle bit of confussion ask your teacher for help and if need be ask if you can stay after school one day a week with the teacher for extra help, if that doesn't help then get a tudor!!

Go over the stuff you learnt in school everytime you get home(if you have time)..it helps cause then it stays in your memory unlike if you learnt at school and left it at school. Also, if you have friends who don't mind doing math together, take some time to sit at a table in the library and go over algebra together. its always good cause you will have fun with your friends which will make studying better.
Hope i helped... :D
