I think it's really strange that your ex doesn't care. He's probably lying about it because it hurts. I think you're asking for trouble. I can't imagine that it won't have an effect on their friendship. If they are really good friends and want to keep it that way then he won't date you.

oooooooh my god!! this same exact thing happened to me 2 years ago! so wierd! OK so.. it won't work.. I'm being honest.. My ex said "i don't care.. infact I think you two would be good for eachother" THEN when we hit it off he had a total fit and it just about ruined their friendship and on top of that the guy i liked (my ex's best friend) didn't want to date me anymore.. we are still friends but I am the "unspoken" ... it really sucks cuz I know exactly how you feel.. To this day, 2 years later if that guy asked me out I'd say yes in a heart beat.. but somethings just don't work out the way we want.. you just have to move on.. I know it really sucks

DO NOT DO IT!! I've been there & done that & it turned out BADLY! I was even in the same exact situation.....my ex didn't care & even said so. Basically the friend just used me, both guys & I stopped talking & they stopped hanging out & talking to each other.....in fact, I think they're STILL not talking. I came to find out later that my ex had lied when he said he didn't care....he really did care & was jealous if I was mentioned but didn't step in cause he had issues going on in his life at the time.

Dating an ex's best friend is right up there along w/ that rule forbidding you to date a friend's ex.......and I completely understand why.

You might just seduce him in the good old natural way.

No words, no intellectualities, no moral scruples,

just hard immediate seduction, and so fiercily sharing the responsibility for the consequences.

Good luck!

Sounds a little awkward but if you truly have feelings for him, go for it. If your ex does not care, then neither should you. However, it may ruin his friendship with your ex but that's between them.

I think it's normal thing, just say him that your ex doesn't care about it.
