I was told that friskes cat food isn't really good for them. My cats eat friskies wet and friskies and whiskas dry cat food. They love the meaty morsels and the one with the carnation milk pieces. Is their any good brand of cat food out their that they may like thats not too expensive? Is whiskas just as bad as friskies? Help!

Here you go! I feed Natural Balance, venison & green pea.

Or you could make your own cat food. You have to know what you're doing, but it is possible, economical, and since you're feeding human-grade food, they have as good a chance as you do to avoid contaminants.

I stay away from anything you can get at discount retailers - so that means anything Purina, Friskies, Whiskas, etc. I feed my cats Science Diet dry foods. I buy the big bags (13-14 lbs), so I spend @ $40 and it lasts at least 2 months. I mix the brand's Adult Light with their Nature's Best Adult food - which comes in chicken and seafood varieties, and, to keep things interesting, I alternate between the two whenever it's time to buy a new bag. Their coats are beautiful, shiny and soft, and their hearts, lungs, teeth, and digestive tracks are all perfect (they both just recently had checkups). We rarely have issues with hairballs or anything else. They're both about 5 years old and both are maintaining a healthy weight - feline obesity is VERY common, but on a steady 3/8 - 1/2 cup daily diet (which is recommended by both vets and the manufacturers), my cats are at a just-right 7 1/2 and 8 1/2 pounds. I should also say that when I'm in the kitchen cooking anything with poultry or seafood, I give each of them a little taste - generally, only my skinny one will eat "people food."

Anyway, my mom has been a vet tech for over 25 years, and we've taken in more orphans than anybody I've ever known. We always fed our beloved dogs and cats Science Diet dry foods. Our cats have all lived between 18 and 20 years.

I hope you find what I've offered helpful.

Friskies and Whiskas are two of the worst diets. IAs far as the recent epidemic, it's only wet food that you have to be scarce about. However, Purina has been cleared and is also one of the healthiest diets, anyhow, so if you're concerned with your pet's health, you have more than one reason to buy Purina. I've been feeding my cat Purina1 since I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed for a heart murmur. The vet recommended this diet as her favorite. Purina1 is a bit more expensive, but worth it in the end.

The best cat foods are those that list some kind of meat as their first ingredient(s). A lot of cat foods have some kind of corn or corn meal or other types of "grainy" stuff as their first ingredients; those are the ones that aren't so healthy. It's kind of like junk food for cats. Read the ingredients on the label and make sure the first ingredient listed is some kind of meat. I only feed my cats Iams and occasionally Science Diet. As far as I know neither was affected by the recent "rat poison" recall. They may be a little pricey but are both very healthy brands and were recommended by my vet. We've had our cats for 2-3 years and that's what we've fed them all along. They love it and are all pretty healthy; none of them have had weight issues or anything like that.

Also I would NOT feed my cat tuna like one person on here suggested. While it may be cheap and will probably not kill your cat, it is not good for them as it does not have any of the nutrients that they need. What's worse is that cats love it so much they may not want to eat anything else, which means if you do decide to start feeding them healthy cat food they may not want to eat it, and they will continue to starve themselves of the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Basically I don't give my cats any kind of "people" food and only feed them food specifically made for cats.

YES...The name of it is WELLNESS.....I have to order it off the internet because no vet or pet store in my area carry's it. But it is well worth the little extra money for shipping. My kitty; Mysti is 15 yrs old; will be 16 this Aug.2007. Wellness is all natural ingredients. It comes in a couple of diff. flavors in the dry-food; and several different flavors in the can-food. I feed Mysti only dry food; fm birth. It is better for her; it keeps her teeth clean, and I can leave out as much as I want for the day while I am at work, so she can eat at her leisure. Mysti is strictly an indoor cat.
If your cat is a male; you will want to feed him mostly can food; along with some hard food; because males tend to get urinary tract problems if they only eat dry-food. You can go on line to http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/cat_faq_index.html
and check out the food; if you email them they will answer you. My baby is worth a few dollars more for keeping her alive and well. I hope this helps you. Wellness costs only a bit more then the grocery store brands; and is well worth it; esp. the peace of mind that she is eating healthy. I hope this is of some help for you. M&M

Ive been feeding my cat tuna since I got her. She is now 17 years old, still looks like a 5 year old cat, and acts like it. She still runs and jumps onto high counter tops and plays like a kitten. I know it could be genetics, but Im really convinced that it was her diet of tuna that did the trick. Plus, tuna is way inexpensive. If you buy it at a bulk store, like Sams Club or Costco, it makes it even cheaper!

My vet recommended it because my cat has a stomach condition and its the only food she can keep down easily. but she is the healthiest cat! her body is in the best condition! she has a beautiful silky coat, strong healthy teeth, and agility and energy like many cats half her age. Plus, tuna is a really healthy food in general, with a lot of nutrients in it. So many people are suprised when they hear how old she is, and I swear its because of her diet.

My cats like Innova best. It's a quality product made by Natura Pet Foods http://www.naturapet.com , and is a dry kibble. Wet cat foods are usually not good for your pet's teeth. A dry kibble will keep your pet's dental problems and bills at a minimum. I'm going to try organic catfoods (like Newman's Own, etc.), and also try making cat food.
