I would not recommend lending on Prosper as an investment. The average returns for lenders have been around 6% (after defaults and fees). That is barely better than a risk free investment, and Prosper lending is very risky.

The way to make money on Prosper is to be a group leader and bring many borrowers into your group. I would recommend reading and participating in the Prosper forums for atleast a month before diving in as a group leader or lender. There are many bright people there, and they all seem very willing to help and share information.

I have dealings with lenders every day. I have asked many times about the legitimacy of Prosper. Every lender I have spoken to about them says they are legitimate but they have heard some bad things about them as far as customer service goes.
