I am not Jewish, but I deal with a lot of Jewish people on a daily basis. What does this phrase "Shabbat Shalom" mean and what is the appropriate response? Should I say "you too" or say it back to the person who said it to me. I don't want to be rude or ignorant...help!

It means peaceful/happy Sabbath (the time between Friday at sundown and Saturday at sundown.)

Say, "Shabbat Shalom!" back.

It basically means, have a nice weekend.

Shabbat is the sabbath or day of rest. (Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy...forthe Lord...rested the seventh day.) Shalom means peace, but more than just the absence of fighting. It includes the idea of wholeness and wellness. So they are wishing you a day of peace and rest. The proper response is "Shabbat Shalom".

There's an old Jewish saying that when the sabbath is observed rightly, the Messiah will come.

It means 'good sabbath' - it's basically just a special version of 'hello'. The appropriate response is 'Shabbat Shalom' back, and sometimes a handshake.

I live in a very rural area, so the nearest synagogue is 60 miles away. However, I have a time share [which I bought, in part, for this purpose] well within walking distance, so I am going to spend Shabbas with friends living in my timeshare. I do this about twice a month and for all the major Yom Tovim [Holy Days]. It is more difficult not living in the Jewish Community, but not impossible and with a little planning and forsight, it is very workable. This is what G-d wants, all Jews and gentiles living the Good Life, obeying His Torah and fitting their world around His Will, rather than trying to do the opposite.

Shabbot Shalom simply means 'Sabbath (Jewish Friday eve till Sat eve) be peaceful' or something similar. If you are not Jewish, then there is no reason why you should reply in Hebrew. Just say, "Thank you, and you have a wonderful Sabbath as well." That way you will tell them that you are nice, and not Jewish, as well as understanding what they just said. --- by the way, I am not Jewish either.
