Yes they are!!!! If raised with children they are very loving to them and very protective!! My four grandchildren were raised around five Dobermans and I never had any problems at all. The children were around them from birth to their current ages, 4,5,6,9. If someone has never experienced first hand the Dobies they should not judge them.

Very good and loyal family dog. If you get one as an adult or an older puppy, make sure you know the background. I wouldn't pick one up at the pound for a family with kids, just because it's hard to determine the history of the dog. If you get one from a breeder, check out the breeding grounds, just to make sure it is humane. Have fun with your doberman!

New puppy owners often make the mistake of endlessly worrying about finding the right puppy treats or bed. They spend little or no time worrying about how or what they will teach their new puppy.
Yes, a puppy needs nutritious food and a safe, warm place to live. But another equally powerful and important biological necessity is the need for a strong pack leader to serve as the dominant source of alpha energy in their lives.
Puppies are naturally hard-wired to follow a pack leader. A pack leader is, by definition, strong, stable and consistent; traits many new puppy owners forget around their dogs. I have had clients who are strong leaders in their jobs, but, when they come home, they turn to mush with their dogs. Then they come to me, puzzled as to why their dog won’t behave.
Puppies sense our confidence levels and will take control if they perceive us as weak. When dogs or puppies take control, bad behaviors, such as excessive barking, leash-pulling, or anxiety, will develop.
The most important thing you can do is to become your puppy’s pack leader. This role doesn’t begin when your dog is six months old or when he’s bad. For your puppy to grow into a healthy, balanced dog, you must demonstrate leadership from day one.
Set boundries for your puppy pertaining to the new baby, and be a good pack leader.

Yes they are if you get one as a puppy so you can train it to protect you and your family. My boyfriend has had 2 Dobermans, a pit bull, a Rotweiler and a giant St Bernard around his boy and they protected him. Even if you get an adult, bring your kids along to see what the dog will do. If they're standoffish, don't get that one. Check your local Humane Society for dogs because they can't keep violent dogs around.

Not really.
They are very large and very active dogs who do not taken direction from children all that well. They require tons of exercise and lots of training and with small children you may not have as much time as you need to work with one.
They can be ok with kids but tend to prefer to take orders from adults. They can easily knock down chilldren and run over them. They play very hard and rough and are not really the best choice for a family with young children.
Our rescue prefers not to place them with people who have chilren under 5.
