Keep it simple! I know it is exciting for you but he won't know what is going on. If you make too much out of it he will only be overwhelmed.

Invite family and maybe a few close friends over after naptime (very important). Have snacks or dinner, cake (can be very intertaining) and let him open his presents. It usually works best just to let him open a few at a time if there are lots of presents. He will probably want to play with some of the toys before all are opened.

You will have plenty opportunities to go all out... believe me. Enjoy a relaxing, fun time with you birthday boy (or girl).

Have fun!

The rule is 1 guest for each year of age. Just get cute pics of the cake smashing. Otherwise the party is more about the parents than the kids anyway. In that case invite some parents and kids over and have a bbq.

Our son just turned 1 and we had a Rubber Ducky themed party. Orientaltrading.com has a lot of themed party favors. Wilton.com has a lot of themed cake pans. I cut out orange duck feet from construction paper and made a path up our driveway, made blue punch and floated rubbe duckies in it, made a rubber ducky cake, ducky games for the nieces and nephews, etc., etc. At this age, I would have to agree that the party is basically for parents and family to socialize, but I can relate that you want to make your child's first birthday special. It only happens once!

Even if your child will not remember his/her first birthday you will! So have fun!

Go with the classic 1st b-day theme or with the theme you have in their room (Trains, animals, Elmo.....)

I did an Elmo theme: used a pic of elmo's face for invitations, had a cake with elmo on it, the goodie bags were red paper lunch bags with Elmo's face on the front (made them myself) and inside I put animal crackers, cheese crackers, and fruit snacks.

keep it simple. invite some family and friends over for a dinner and enjoy watch your lil one smash his/her cake. i would not make it a big deal right now, beleive me in a few years when you have five 3 yr olds running around in your home to celebrate your lil ones birthday you are going to wish you could just have a simple dinner or celebration. have fun-good luck!
