Does it count as "taking the LORD's name in vain"?

What exactly is "mocking", anyway? I mean, I know I can look it up in the dictionary, but give me some guidelines here... what counts as "mocking God" and what doesn't?

Well, what do you do when you mock someone? You insult them. Some people here think it's funny to take the sacred name of God and make a joke out of it. That would be mocking.

Taking the Lord's name in vain isn't always mocking. It has more to do with calling on God when one isn't serious. When you are just joking around, or swearing. You shouldn't call on God when you don't really want him around - nor if you don't even believe in him to begin with.

Is it a sin? To Christians and Jews it is. A grave sin. One is not to mock God - to blasphem God. In some cases in Jewish Law it was considered an offense punishable by stoning. When you mock something - you are denying it's power and existence. In Christianity - this is an unforgivable sin when done in reference to the Holy Spirit.

One of the ten commandments says to "not take the name of the Lord your God in vain". This not only includes using the name of God as a swear word, but also mocking or taking God lightly. It can also mean saying you believe in God and not living like it. Another way to mock God is to refuse to recognize him as God, thereby not giving him the respect he deserves.
Because God knows your heart, he also knows when you are being honest. If you have done something wrong and you pray for forgiveness without being truly sorry, you are mocking God. God knows your motivations and intentions. He knows whether you are praying for self gain or selfish motives.
While there are many ways to mock God, it is ultimately treating God in an irreverant or prideful manner through speech, thought and way of life.

I think a better question would be, what do you mean by mocking God? There are a few Mell Brookes films that i would definitely put into the catagory of 'mocking God.' Is it a sin to watch them? ... Well, probably. God wants us to fill our lives with things that glorify Him. Most movies today do not glorify God, even in the least.

If you mean mocking God by saying bad jokes about him, I think I would rather say something that honors Him. Sin is a touchy word, there are plenty of things in life that aren't exactly sinful ... but then again, the Bible names quite a few that are. Taking the Lord's name in vain (using it out of context as an exclamation - like hitting your thumb with a hammer and saying, as well as using in profanely - like in the negative "God I wish I could get laid" "Jesus is the brother of Satan").

Rather than wandering if mocking god is a sin, perhaps we could wander how to glorify him and use his name in a positive sense.

Mocking God is a sin because it blasphemes the Holy Spirit. Mocking, in the biblical sense, is ridiculing. It is something that is done quite regularly on YA. It is perverting God's word, cursing God, making light of his word. It is talking about God in human terms, which is insulting to him. It is reducing God to a form that is less than what he is. Mockers, if they do not repent, will not be seen in heaven.

Can't speak for mocking God.

However, mocking the religious, if not a sin,
is morally wrong.

Just as mocking those of us who are unreligious
or just plain agnostic.

Indeed, mocking people in general, is pretty
suspect.

Mocking is imitating with the intent of making the original look less than. Man always imitates God when he takes it upon himself to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, instead of the fruit of the spirit which is from the other tree which stood in the garden which is the tree of life and represents God being God in our lives.

I don't know, but it would be interesting if mocking God is a sin, but when the President of the United States says that God told him to invade Iraq, that's not a sin.

Mocking God is most certainly a sin.
"Mocking" means to make fun of. So... to deliberately, knowingly make fun of God is contemptuous at best, and eternal death at worst.

I've seen a lot of it on this site.
As a matter of fact a tremendous amount.

To make fun of.
To jest.
To deride.
To belittle.
To out and out curse.
To revile.

Have you ever wondered about people when they get sick, why.
When things happen in their lives that are painful.
Physical, psychological, emotional.

KryptonOne for example.
