Ptcheen is what used to be made illegally in Ireland to avoid the revenue taxes. For all I know it might still be made. However, it is available legally. Potcheen is simply what comes directly out of the still after distillation occurs. There is no aging in oak barrels to give it a mellower tase and the rich color that Irish whiskey is known for. It can be purchased legally. I have an acquantaince who has a bottle he purchased in Ireland

Potheen or poteen, distilled illegally, to this day, & up to twice the strength of "normal" spirits. The difference is it's not "cut" with water as nanny directs.
Anyone would think they were in Jamaica or Austria or Finland, where nanny isn't quite so stern...

The word is Poteen
Illegally produced Irish whiskey; moonshine, made using potatoes. It is a clear liquid like vodka or gin as opposed to the traditional colour of whiskey or scotch. The same product has been legalized in some circumstances, but it typically refers to the illegal brew.
(Could be synonymous with "INSTANT BRAIN DEATH")

Most of the answers here are correct , it is illegal and is quite capable of causing alcoholis poisoning. It's extremely potent and I would recommend that you stay well clear of it. Stick to a nice Jamiesons or Black Bush.

poteen is pronounced potcheen. it's made from potatoes and distilled through copper pipes. it is clear like vodka.
in illegal brew, it was mainly produced in the outlying country areas.
lethal stuff ! a good batch would strip paint off doors.

its distilled up in the hills back yonder ,its great for arthritis when its mixed with olive oil and warmed up then rubbed into affected area serious but its a tough drink hard on the stomach and if you care about living stay clear they call it moonshine because its made when its dark .= .
