Here's a great acupressue technique I used to teach in self-help massage programs. You can do it to yourself, but having a spouse or friend do it will allow you to get more benefit from it.
Firmly grip the meaty part of the back of your neck using the palm of your hand and the flat surfaces of your fingers (i.e., not the tips). Hold that grip for about a minute. Then use the same grip on the meaty muscles going down from the sides of your neck to both shoulders (called the trapezius muscles).
You will be amazed at how much it helps necks spasms and "cricks."

I certainly have this concern additionally..... The expert instructed me that Glucosomine is not any good..it would not do what they say its meant too. there is not any longer lots which would be carried out, however the only way i'm getting alleviation is to get a warm water bottle.....positioned a easy towel around it..and heat the neck for approximately 15 Min's... Then workout your neck....first look left then correct...up and down..0.5 correct and 0.5 left finding down... on the top of those strikes positioned a sprint stress on. ..In different words push a sprint on the severe... It hurts, yet after a on a similar time because it eases the neck circulation.... do this at favourite periods... good success...

Try a relaxing massage or have a friend or someone give you a neck massage, just gently.
As well, prior to the friend doing the massage, have a hot towel or a heating pad warm the muscles & see if that helps.
I get that due to tension headaches and find that reg. every 2-3 wks massage helps a lot.

Give some more info, or email me... but, is your neck stuck to one side and unable to straighten out. Painful when upright, but less so when lying down, and lastly is one side of your neck very hard, while the other is normal?
Following the additional details, it is unlikely to be a spasm. So the best thing to do is to take painkillers and avoid muslce relaxants. It should sort itself out fairly soon. You can try massages, but be a bit careful.
