The quote doesn't refer to a physical image, but rather a reflection. God is not a physical being. There are many words that could be used to describe God, none of which are adequate, but perhaps the most appropriate here would be 'infinite potential'.
The physical manifestation, including mankind, is the actualization of one of these potentials. In this way, man is not God itself; the potential, but rather a reflection of this potential that has taken physical form.
If there is the concept of a discarnate spirit, or soul, that continues after the death of the body, and this soul has no physical form, why would it be believed that God is stuck with this physical form? God is the Source and substance of all things, manifest and unmanifest, and is in no way limited to a physical form as Essence.
As some here have correctly noted, this is the attempt to create God in man's image.

Go and read the WHOLE of Genesis and you will see that 'male and female' he created them.
Man is general for mankind. So women are also included and therefore also created in God's image. A fact certain Christians should keep in mind. LOL

When He spoke of man it included both sexes. So Eve also
was created in the image of God.

Genesis 1:27 says
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. " This means that the woman was created in God's image also.

If you are really interested read Ezekiel 1:26-28. And furthermore the term man is general for mankind. God formed
Adam from the dust, but God built Eve from the DNA of Adam's
rib. Quit asking stupid questions, because you are just here
to antagonize Chrisitans.

I don't think that he did. I think it's just a story. If anything, man made God after his own image.

man = mankind (all of us...men and women)
God created man (Adam) and then used man to create woman (Eve), both are then created in his image.
