When I saw your question I was going to say that Pit Bulls are very nice dogs. Though I KNOW they are very sweet, friendly, loving family companions, for a first time dog owner, they can be intimidating, only because of their looks. I think you and your husband should to to an animal shelter and pick out a dog together. You can choose a puppy, just be sure to do your research, so you know what your getting in to. Or you can choose an adult dog. This way you know how big the dog is going to be, and how it looks as an adult. And when looking for a playful but obedient dog, look for a dog who is not off the walls hyper. And any dog can learn basic obedience training.
I think you and your husband should find breeds that you both agree you like, and weigh the pros and cons to decide. Then you know more of what you are looking for if you plan to adopt. This website is very helpful:

Good Luck finding your new companion!!!
I agree with above poster, Boxers are excellent dogs!! Very friendly, not intimidating, and playful. But they do sometimes take more time to obedience train. But WELL worth it.

If you want a playful, obedient dog..your best bet is the German Shepherd...or the border collie. It also depends where you live, and your lifestyle..are you busy..then don't get a dog..at home ready to play..then these are perfect!
Don't get a lab..they are terrible for dog haters and jump at any chance, and are also not the most obedient dogs! They also smell quite a bit because of oily fur. Definitely , a GSD would be perfect!

Get a German Shepherd. They are playful, obedient, loyal, and protective if bred and trained properly.
Take the time to research and find a good breeder.
You won't be sorry.

The German shepherd dog. They are highly intelligent, which is why they are so widely used. They are gentle, beautiful, and overall obedient. Plus they learn extremely fast. Also the Labrador retriever is a good candidate.

Take a visit to the local shelter. Find a dog that catches your eye (and his). You'll be able to interact with the dog before signing an adoption form, to ensure that the dog is suitable for your family.
Rescue dogs are the best dogs.

Golden Retrievers are really sweet dogs. I had one and she was very kind. Golden Retrievers are very sweet and loyal. Normally my aunt doesn't like dogs but once she met our dog she loved her. Also Golden Retrievers can be a good size and you said your husband wants a big dog so it is a win win.Hope this helps.

Small terriers shouldn't make you afraid like Yorkies and Cairn terriers. A Cairn terrier is what was in the Wizard of Oz as the dog Toto.

Labs and Goldens have to be the sweetest things... there's no going wrong with 1 of those or a mix of the 2... PS there is nothing wrong with PIT-BULLS my in laws have one, She is more timid than my border collie, who was abused and dumped...
