Pull them aside and explain to them that behavior wont be tolerated. If it happens again, call the parents instead of office referrals. Parents usually dont stand for that crap.

Since this is the R&S board I take it your looking for a religious response.
Well the biblical thing to do is to kill the child.
It says so clearly in Exodus 21:15, Leviticus 20:9, and Deuteronomy 21:18-21.... Even Jesus says that this is what you should do, what his followers have to do (and he criticizes those who don't obey these laws) in Mark 7:9-13, and Mathew 15:4-7.
The Quran is similar in its punishments.
Of course the moral and ethical thing to do is to ignore religion altogether and buy a book (founded in child psychology and teaching) to learn the best and most appropriate ways of learning.

I have recently listened to an audio series that my wife got at the library called the 1-2-3 Method. It involves counting as a punishment (sounds stupid I know, but wait). You give them two chances, without giving any signs of emotion, when you get to three you give them their age in minutes in 'time-out' or some other type of punishment (maybe even a three strikes and you've got detention program?).
If they do something that is too bad, you just tell them 'that's three' and punish. Otherwise, if they are older kids, just treating them as little children will be embarrasing to a point that maybe they won't want to be counted again.

*My (Dale Carnegie) secret* when one of my students acts confrontational in class is to "call their bluff." Granted, I do this only once to show them that their "attitude" is not appreciated in class, then I continue with the in-class lesson. Once my bait is taken, I intentionally progress with the pending lesson.
I call this a BARBARA WALTERS TECHNQUE (remember the broadcast interviews she had with the Iraqui leader in the 1970's Anwar Sadat?)
This usually shows the other students that I AM NOT ONE TO PUT UP WITH ANY *.*&^% as The TEACHER.

At some point you take him/her aside and try to find out why he/she is acting this way. Do not ask them in front of their peers as they will be embarrassed and either refuse to answer or give you a false answer.
Also, what does this have to do with religion?
