it depends on how you give it out: some spammers have a program that trawls sites for email addresses. to get around that you can put your email address out if you want to in a question or answer in the format:
username@
yourisp.ext

or youname@ yourisp.ext this requires more work and spammers are generally lazy so they can not be bothered to chek lists to see if the information gathered is correct.

I put my email specialy set up address in answers often in one of the formats above and as yet no spam has ever entered my home mail server as a result.

if you want to be safe then just enable your profile to allow anyone to email you. this is relatively simple to do. then do not post your email address in any questions or answers.
just say if you want to get in touch details in my profile. anyone who really wants to get in touch will go to your profile and mail you using the link provided.

as for is it safe. it depends, some people will be genuine and be open and honest, others will pretend to be what they are not. so you have to keep your wits about you.
as always with anything online never give out personally identifiable information such as full name, address phone number date of birth etc.
so keep safe!
