you have to reinstall 98, assuming that you have the windows 98 disk and serial number. With the computer off and 98 inside the drive, turn PC on. On the first screen you see before winxp start, press setup that is usually F12. choose boot from cd-rom. win98 will start. Select "start comp.with cd-rom support".after that you will see A:\ type fdisk and Enter. you will have 5 options. Press option 3 and 4 after that. to delete non dos partition. Go back and create the primary dos partition again and make it active. exit pc and start again. go to F12 setup again and boot the 98 from there. This time you will be prompted make the NTFS partition active, format the drive and to setup win98 in your computer.

depending on how you installed xp on the 98 machine, it may have wiped out the 98 stuff. resone for that is because to upgrade a system, it has to have an upgrade disk. most installs with delete everything unless you choose it to not to. you can alway go into your local computer store and ask for a copy of XP make sure it is exactly what you have on your computer now. tell them the disk was lost and you need a copy . once you get it, then you can finish doing the 98 machine. the recovery XP disk will only work on the newer machines. some of the older recovery disk would have done what you tried to do but not in this case.

You need the original install discs for Windows 98 and need to re-format the hard drive.

You definitely need the Original Win 98 SE disks, but no reformat is necessarily needed.
