Hey Iowa Girl,
The opening paragraph eludes to his family in Wikipedia:
"William "Captain" Kidd (c.1645 – May 23, 1701) ...
Kidd was born into a reputable family in Dundee, Scotland in 1645. However, after the death of his father when he was five, Kidd's family's income was severely reduced. As a young man he chose to head out to sea, and bounced around freely from ship to ship for three decades."
So, now you have his birth date and real name. You will need to be careful with this, because there are hundreds of William Kidds, see Family Search. There is an entry for him with the right dates, but it does not show his parents.
That means that you need to go to other sources. First next place to try is the GENFORUM and there are over 3000 messages there. So, you search for "Captain" and you find that 57 entries deal with Captain.
This should help you out. William Kidd was the son of Reverend John Kidd, a Presbyterian Calvinistic minister and Bessie Butchart. - an entry in the Genforum.
Captain WIlliam Kidd's younger daughter, Sarah Kidd Latham and her husband, Joseph Latham(a shipbuilder).
