I know this sounds wierd but put a little water in the pot with a fabric softner sheet and just let is sit for a little while then come back and it will wipe clean very easy. It works every time

oddly enough: put about an inch or so of water inthe pot, drop in a dryer sheet (Bounce, Snuggle, any kind will do) and let it sit overnight. The next morning, the yucky burnt stuff will wipe right out.

Use a steel wool pad and scrub if it's glass or stainless steel. If it's another type of metal let it soak in warm water for a while and then use a soft scrubber.

Scrubbing with a product like Comet powder might work, if it's really stubborn I've heard that soaking it with a small amount of ammonia is supposed to work well.
