Im leaving for my trip to New York in a couple days and i would like to bring a couple of disposable cameras with on the plane. However im afraid that the bar things you walk threw will mess up the film? Could this happen?

I always carry my cameras and my laptop on the plane as opposed to checking them. I also inform the TSA officers that I prefer them to look over my items by hand, and since i'm also a Disabled Vet with a metal implant and a bullet stuck in me i usually hold up the line anyway....

I fly every week and I am a photographer. Here is the scoop...

Cameras are allowed on planes and you can even take pictures onboard if you like (just be considerate of the flash and the fact that it will disturb others).

When you go through security, any fim up to ASA 400 will be okay in the xray machine. Above that, you run the risk of having the film damaged by the x-rays. If you have a disposable for outdoor use, that will be ASA 100 or 200 and there is no problem. Some of the indoor use one (that are ASA800, will have to be kept out of the xray and then hand inspected by the TSA (meaning it's probably better to just check it - although keep in mind that checked luggage is sometimes x-rayed). The metal detector or the puffer machine that checks for explosive residue will not impact your film in any way whatsoever.

You can now buy digital disposables, so you might consider one of those which will suffer no ill effects from the x-ray machine and give you piece of mind of not having to worry about having your pictures ruined.

Have fun and safe travels.

First look at the ISO of the film which is inside your camera, most likely it will be 400 or 100. Most of your X-ray machines are safe with film below 800 ISO, and on the front of the x-ray is a warning of which film ISO ratings are safe for that particular machine. This really depends upon the airport that you are at but most of the time if you say that you want your cameras and film to be manually checked they will oblige. On some occasions I had to prove that I had high speed film in my camera, and in my bag before they checked it manually. Anyhow your camera should be safe as long as it isn't high speed film inside that camera.

We did the same on our trip to Jamaica.
We were told that the security scanners would mess up the film, so we made sure we had easy access to them and put them in the bucket with the coins, etc. that they have you empty from your pockets.
Another couple we were with tried to do the same thing and the guard said the security devices wouldn't mess up the film and made them send them through like everything else. Their photos turned out fine, too.
I would try to insist that they let you put them in the bucket or ask for your bag to be checked by hand, just to be sure.

Don't put your cameras or film in your check bags, carry them on. The x-rays, and metal detectors don't damage the film, if they do it is minimal. I've done it before with film and nothing was damaged, and my film turned out fine when I processed it. If you are still worried though, just call the airline or talk to someone when you get there, I'm sure it's a common question.

You have to remove cameras and film from your carry on and give them to a security guard BEFORE you go through the metal detector. I suggest if you are unfamilar with travel restrictions, you should check out www.faa.gov, and get to the airport extra early. If you are really nervous, wait to purchase the cameras until you reach NY.

I don't think they will let you take cameras on a plane (but I'm not sure) because of that liquid thing that could set off a bomb and I think cameras have some type of liquid for something in them becuase when we first heard about that they said that pushing the button to take a picture on the plane would have set the bomb off. That's what I heard on the news.

You can ask the TSA people at the security line... sometimes they offer to check it by hand... or they'll tell you if it's okay to go through or not.

DO NOT PUT THEM IN YOUR CHECK BAG, it will expose the negatives. if you put them in your carry on it won't be any problem.
