I do not know much about his past but h wants to go out every night and he doesn't seem to want to go walking or potty. He just whines and whines. Noramlly he will not go out unless I am with him but at night he will go out and not even notice I am not There! This is not his usual behavour. Can anyone tell me what might be going on?

All he wants to do is sit on the balcony or in the yard and sniff the wind! I would'nt mind it but it is almost always at 10 or 11 p.m. and I have to get up for work at 5 am!!

Th rules of the foster program say I must not leave him outside alone ever. This wanting to ge outside is a new behavour and I need to get him to be an inside dog not an outside dog.

Yikes! And yes he is walked every day at least 3 times and I do let him in the yard to play for at least a 1/2 hour in the am and again in the pm.

I believe he is experiencing his new surroundings.

Things are still and silent at night. He can gain a better sense of where he is and what is around him at that time.

Dogs are creatures of habit, familiarity, and these things make them secure. Witness the dog who is in a brand new place, they are almost frantic trying to 'discover' everything, almost manic about it. Once he recognizes all of the nightly sounds and smells, and they become familiar, he may relax and while he may never want to spend the night inside he may stop whining when it's time for bed.

You mentioned a balcony. Perhaps you can leave the door open and add a screen. He can lay there to his heart's content. Nothing elaborate, just enough to satisfy him.

You are a doll for looking after this poor boy. Perhaps he was kept in a crate, I mean, some animals are kept in crates all the time.

You will never know for sure what is going on with this guy but you can manage a best guess and try to give him what he needs to be a happy dog.

I am wondering if he is missing his previous family. How long have you had him? Was he a stray or was he an owner surrender? And maybe in his old life, he was left outside at night and he is use to that. I would call a vet, just to make sure nothing medical is going on. Any new behavior needs to be watched carefully and a quick call to a vet never hurts. But my guess is that he is trying to adjust to his new life, but old memories are keeping him up at night. I would suggest not to give in and take him outside, unless you think he needs to potty, of course. Sooner or later he'll get use to sleeping all night inside. Good luck! Foster parents are awesome, by the way!

Some people get rid of a dog over 2 yrs old which I hate. When I was young 2 people got rid of a dog 1 my aunt took in it refused to eat and just died of heartbreak, The other dog I knew of 5yrs old never ever left his yard wandered off, after6 mos. He was noticed by a neighbor going toward a rr tracks. Maybe that is going on w/your adoptee???? His old owner possibly came in about 10-11??? Try doing something at your bedtime like play and getting a delicious treat.

when you take him for a walk next time get a long rope and let him lead you on the walk . there is a chance this dog has figured out where its home was or is.
another possible answer is to let him sleep in your room .
