Hello, I am a college student currently studying early childhood education and I have an assignment to Interview parents of young children (age 2 and older) to determine what they mean when they use the word "discipline." If you wouldn't mind answering the following questions, it would be greatly appreciated!
1. What does the word "discipline" mean to you?
2. How do you discipline your children?
3. Does the method of discipline that you use work? Why or why not?
4. What kind of discipline do you expect your child's teacher to use?
5. Why do you think so many children have problems controlling their behavior today?

Hi, I'm a mom of 3 and 2 of those 3 are 4 and 2....ha ha, that was a lot of numbers.

1. What does the word "discipline" mean to you? Discpline means to me: guiding your children, teaching them right from wrong, responsibility and respect by communicating with them and using other means of punishment to help teach them.
2. How do you discipline your children? Most often I get down on my childrens eye level and address them. The first time they misbehave I explain to them what they are doing that is wrong, why it is wrong and what they can do to keep it from happening again. I also warn them that if they continue the behavior, they will be spanked. I always follow through with my threats no matter what they are.
3. Does the method of discipline that you use work? Why or why not? Yes it is very effecting. My children know that I am serious and they usually don't push me too far. They are not afraid of me and I have a very affectionate and loving relationship with them.
4. What kind of discipline do you expect your child's teacher to use? I am guessing that we are talking about pre-school or daycare teachers? I don't take my kids to daycare so I have no answer for that, but, in elementary school I do expect my children to be adequately punished for whatever they do.
5. Why do you think so many children have problems controlling their behavior today? I honestly believe it is because so many parents put so little time and effort into their kids. Parents would rather just get their kids to shut up instead of really dealing with the issues at hand so they give in to whatever the kids want. Kids are getting more and more spoiled and parents are getting more and more lazy with discipline. So few parents are truly consistent and actually follow through.

1) To me, discipline means teaching your child right from wrong, teaching them to obey.
2) I take away something that she wants, make her have a time out, a nap, or a spanking.
3) Yes, it works. She's a great kid. I get compliments on how polite, well behaved, and friendly she is all the time.
4) I expect the teacher to send home a note or call me if there are behavioral issues. Also , the teacher may take away play time or fun events that the other children participate in.
5) I think many children in today's society aren't disciplined and therefore, believe they are the parent and they rule their household. Many families have a double income and may feel guilty that they only have a few hours a day to spend time with their children so they spoil them. Or their children may experience too many different forms of discipline (not consistent) from daycare providers, teachers, grandparents, in-laws, etc. Children need consistent discipline to thrive.

1. Discipline to me is rules and the consequences (or rewards) that follow from the actions of the child - either making the right decisions or not.
2. I was whipped as a child - so I try talking and then restrictions from that point.
3. It seems to work with my older child - the youngest (2 yrs.) is more of a learning period at this point - she is really too little to understand the world at this point.
4. I expect my child's teach to treat my child with the same level or respect that my child gives them. And I expect that my child know that there would be consequences should they get in trouble at school.
5. Simple - parents who are tuned out - kids that are plugged into something electronic - instead of face to face. Too little time and too much going on.

it is my place to discipline my child, I expect her to listen and respect her teacher and she does. I try to explain why to my child, yes there are times that I may yell when I am fed up but after-wards I go back and explain what she did wrong.
