We lost our dog to it Feb 16, had to put her down from neurological (brain) damage.
She died as people would die from rat poisoning. She never had a real diagnoses, the vets were baffled and at the end felt even though she was only 9 that it was vestibular disease (old dog neurological disease).
Just found out this week that we were giving her the tainted food prior to her falling ill.
The wounds have opened up all over again-

It wasn't a PETA plant, everyone. Sorry. My husband is a supplier for Iams, and my cousin works with Nutro. The wheat gluten, like almost everything else that goes in the dog food, originates from China. Once in the States, it is mixed into the food (and sometimes it is cleaned and reprocessed in the States, if China didn't do a good enough job). Aminopterin was most likely used on the crops in China, and then the wheat wasn't cleaned properly. And it would be the FDA, not the FBI, who would investigate. Luckily, my husband's company doesn't do wheat gluten because its an allergin; but other suppliers will be investigated once investigators know for sure what they're looking for.

I wouldn't be surprised if PETA wasn't behind it either!! Or a disgruntled employee. This is going to be a multi million dollar recall. The one thing that is kind of strange is that rat poisoning normally does not just cause kidney damage. Some of us were talking about maybe someone put in ethylene glycol instead of propylene glycol. I wouldn't be surprised if they find more things in the food.
The Aminopterin is a chemotherapy drug and is sometimes used as a rodenticide in other countries. They had stopped using this drug in the 1950's as there was too much problem with toxicity with it. It is now being used again for Leukemia. They have not sprayed crops with this drug at all.

The rat poison they found in the food is different than the kind we use here in the US. Our rat poison here usually causes bleeding because it destroys clotting factors - this is not what's going on with the animals that are sick from this pet food. This chemical was used in China to kill or repell rats. Somehow it got on the wheat that was shipped over here to be used by this one factory to make pet food. The chemical causes kidney damage when it crystalizes and is excreted by the kidneys. I don't understand why we had to buy wheat from China when we seem to have plenty here.

Dog/cat food - USA & Canada. Too soon yet to know exactly what happened. Analyses take time - too many brands have to be tested.

I wouldn't be surprised if PeTA is behind it. They've targeted this company before, and they've managed to get people inside as employees before too.
Bear, this isn't regular rat poison (Warfarin), it's something called Aminopterin.
