I am probably going to be the minority here. I live in the country, which has a rule: Dogs are outside dogs, as long as they can handle the weather. Chow chows usually have thicker coats- they can handle most weathers. A chihuahua, on the other hand, can not handle most winters and needs to be inside. Our dogs, while they love people and being with the family, prefer to be outside. They will come inside, but are usually whining at the door within 10 minutes. Outside animals (holds true for everything, including people) are generally more healthy, have a better immune system, and withstand changes better. (Look at all of the asthma and allergies cropping up- reports say that is due to people living in too clean of an environment (indoors- not outside in the dirt and air)).

As for the family- it is a preference. Dogs get stinky, you have to housebreak them, make sure you are home to let them go out to the bathroom, and sometimes get a wet nose in your face in the middle of the night.

I live on 10 acres and the only pets we have inside year round is my cockatiels. The snakes and ferrets go out in the summer, and the dogs, cats, and horses are always outside (with adequate shelter, food and water of course).

If it is hot out the chow must be kept indoors with a fan as it will get too hot, otherwise it can go inside or out.

I would'nt put it out in the rain as the heavy coat will keep a lot of water and the chow might get sick, not to mention the funky smell! LOL

Chow Chows love to be with the family. He/she should be able to sleep indoors and be included in everyday life.

The dog would probably LOVE to sleep next to your bed.

What does your family prefer? I'm sure the dog would rather sleep inside with you. If it gets hot in your area he will need the air-conditioning inside to stay cool. I don't think it a good idea for any dog to sleep outside unless they have a dog house and a safe fenced in area to keep them from harm.

I find it better for them to sleep indoors, especially for older chow chows. You can put mats for them to sleep on-you can use those that looks like puzzles that you use for kids to prevent joint problems.

I don't believe in having a dog and then leaving it outside. You pick a dog for a pet the vast majority of the time, to be one of the family. It's like making one of the kids or maybe one of your parents sleep out in the yard.
