Wow! This is exciting. I am a purist. If this is your FIRST TIME.....have them the traditional way with butter and a good quality Maple Syrup (make sure it's real maple syrup not the commercial brands which are corn syrup).

And enjoy.

If you like them this way, you can do just about anything with waffles as all the other people here suggest. You can make waffles savory (topped with bacon and cheese) or sweet with jams and syrups. Or simply use them the way you would use bread.

However one of the most popular ways is to eat it for breakfast with fruit and other things. Although you can definitely use waffles as a dessert........topping with ice cream, fruit, syrups, nuts, etc. similar to an ice cream sundae. You can make them gourmet - topping them with fine liqueurs, whipped cream, etc.

ENJOY!

Ah waffles...one of the best comfort foods out there. My favorite way to have them is with butter and maple syrup, with a side of scrambled eggs and bacon. However, if I'm in more of a dessert type mood, I'll put strawberries and whipped cream on them and then dust it all with powdered sugar.

Another good recipe to try is to cut up some bananas and saute them with some butter and honey to where the bananas soften and caramelize a bit and the honey and butter form a syrup. Then, pour that over the waffles.

Have a yummy dinner!!!!!

Gotta have bacon with waffles.

AMAXXXING BUTTERMILK WAFFLES

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
2 eggs, separated
4 tablespoons[1/2 stick] butter, melted and cooled
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Vegetable oil for brushing on waffle iron

Possible toppings: Butter, Syrup [pref. Grade B], Superfine Sugar, Whipped Cream, Crème Fraiche, Ice cream, sour cream, fresh fruit [bananas, blueberries, strawberries, papaya, etc.], freshly grated nutmeg; cinnamon sugar; options are endless, really.

1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda [and cinnamon, if using]

2. Mix together the buttermilk and the egg yolks. Stir in butter and vanilla.

3. Brush the waffle iron lightly with oil and preheat it. Stir the
buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture. Beat the egg whites
with a wire whisk or electric mixer until they hold soft peaks.
Stir them gently into the batter.

4. Ladle the batter [about a ladleful] onto the waffle iron and bake
until the waffle is golden-brown, usually 3 to 5 minutes.
Serve immediately, or keep warm for a few minutes in a low oven.

"WHAT'S ON THIS" Bacon

A great accompaniment to waffles. The best way to do bacon is in the oven at 425 degrees. Baking times will vary, but the longer it bakes, the more caramelized the sugar becomes; therefore, this recipe is at its best when the bacon is cooked closer to "crisp". You can cook the bacon under the broiler for the last minute or two of cooking, to make it crisp and go that extra step in caramelizing the sugar, watching it CAREFULLY. Take care when removing the pan from the oven. Baking time is about 12 minutes for crisp.

Feel free to adjust the "rub" seasonings to your liking.

1/2 lb. bacon
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons cayenne [more or less to taste]
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 425

Line a jelly roll pan with aluminum foil. Mix the sugar, cayenne, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Sprinkle half the sugar-spice mixture evenly over the foil-lined sheet. Arrange the bacon in a single layer over the seasoned foil. Sprinkle the rest of the sugar-spice mixture over the bacon. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or to desired crispness. No need to turn the bacon. Drain on paper toweling.

I like my waffles buttered with some good maple syrup on top and maybe some fresh fruit. And on the side, some bacon strips or sausage patties..and every now and then a fried egg along side. Source: Waffle House Restaurant. Oh and make the coffee good and strong.

Excellent with blackcurrant and whipped cream, or with melted chocolate! Alone it's very good too, but if you add powdered sugar on them.
Now I feel like eating waffles!!! - Went to Belgium last week and forgot to have some :(
