and primed it with one coat. I going to use a high gloss black enamel to finish it with. do I need to use a 2nd coat of primer? The primer I used was oil based white. Also putting a brass kick plate on the bottom of the door. any suggestions with that?

That is exactly what I did to my front door. One coat of primer worked for me, then I had my painter use two coats of black paint. I used a magnetic brass kick plate that I found at Home Depot and brass entry hardware with a brass lion's head door knocker. It will look awesome!

for the second coat of primer, you might want to take it to the paint store and have it tintd a very dark grey, black might be possible. and for a high gloss black enamel, how are you going to make sure it's smooth no brush strokes.

Put a real nice brass or silver plated door knocker on it.

Best curb appeal you will get is flower beds. Lots of colors....also, make sure your yard is cleaned up of garbage, leaves etc....
