My adult daughter with bipolar who lives with us has a room out of control, so does my grandson, because she never picks up either of them. She always says she needs to clean them, but she never seems to get around to it. Laundry piles up, shoes, oh my god. And money, she still can't manage money, and she has a good job, a career actually. For a short time she had an apartment with a guy and he did all the house work and cooking.

It's normal for *any* teenager to have a messy room, and yes, most people clean up as they mature.
I don't know what to do to encourage a teen to clean their room, because my parents encouraged me for years but my room never stayed clean for longer than a week. Some people are just messy; I figure if your kid is happy with the room being that way and they can find stuff (and it doesn't smell bad or have mold or anything) then just let it go. There are bigger problems to deal with, and it's not worth fighting over.

Teens are messy, but doesn't mean you have to put up with it. Make them earn priviledges and encourage them in all they do. The last thing a teen needs is constant arguing. Sit down and talk to your kids and tell them what is expected in a matter of fact way and tell them the consequences if they don't listen.
When the kids get married they will be just like us telling their kids to clean up too. Were your teens diagnosed with bipolar?

My daughter's room is awful. But my nonbipolar kid has a pretty messy room as well. The difference is when the non kid gets sick of it, she digs in and gets it cleaned up. The BP kid... never happen.
No, I think they will probably not get organized enough to manage on their own. Or maybe I'm just discouraged this week and shouldn't have answered this question?
p.s. I'm so sorry about that guy above's answer. How disrespectful. I know it's hard to have people's understanding if they have not had to contend with someone that has a mental illness.

When I was a kid- teenager I kept my room a mess, it's a stage. I have had my own home since around the age of 18, I'm spotless. My house has to be perfect & CLEAN or I go nuts.

trying to teach and animal to clean its own cage is impossible,
the only reason a child doesn't clean their room is because they are to lazy and have no ownership. if you wish it to change they require a significant emotional event.
i would put a lock on the door and make them sleep in the basement and don't let them in there until they can keep it clean if not you just shut up and do like so many other idiot parents that say " they just wont listen"
it is your house your room not theirs its just being allowed if they are part of the team if not they are out of the good-stuff, teach them one lousy thing in their lives its not a big deal. if that doesn't work then bring their teachers over one day and ask them to see the bedrooms that is what an significant emotional event or experience is all about.

I wasn't bipolar and my room was a disaster area. It may be part of his symptomology or just being a teenager. Shut the door and don't sweat the small stuff.
