I am a 24 year old woman who still lives at home. I have no college education or job and only $300 in savings. My mother uses me as an on-call babysitter for younger siblings. My whole family is verbally and mentally abusive to me. I am currently trying to get into college but am having no luck because I did not take 2 years of a foreign langue in high school. I can not help but felling hopeless.

I suspect the reason your mom feels at liberty to use you as an on call babysitter is that she feels an adult such as yourself should contribute substantially toward the work and expenses involved in running a household. Without a job I suspect you are not contributing toward payments on the house, utilities, groceries etc. It indeed sounds like it is time for you to leave the nest, but you must have a job to make this happen. Perhaps you can list your life and work experiences on Yahoo Answers and others can give you tips regarding finding the right job for you. Your lacking foreign language credits should not deter you from entry to a state college. Such a school would simply require that you take remedial language courses with them for no credit. I wonder if there is some other issue such as SAT scores involved. Keep looking for someone to take you. Try a junior college whose credits you know will transfer to a university. Where will you get the money? The same way most students do...deferred college loans. Don't get discouraged. At 24 your just getting started.

I'm not sure where you live or what colleges your are applying to, you should be able to get into college and if they require the foreign language you will just have to take that in your first year. Check online for grants and scholarships (they come in all shapes and sizes)...some target non-traditional students (those who do not go right out of high school). In the mean time, I'd get a job right way....if you're living at home, you'll be able to save most of your income. Tell your parents you'll be happy to babysit, around your work schedule. Once you get some income coming in, if you have not been able to enroll due to lacking foreign languages, then use some of your income and enroll in a foreign language course. Don't give up...you're still plenty young enough to start your college career. Once you get a job, look in the paper for ads for roommates. You'll be amazed how great you feel when you're out on your own!

you could try to go to a technical college because certain ones do not have requirements for foreign language, they are also cheaper then universities. Then afterwards you can always transfer to a university with the credits from the technical college. You might also try to get a job so you can get some more money and look for an apartment complex that works with low income people where they only take a certain percentage of your income. Good luck with everything!! :)

Hoping is not going to get you anywhere. Get up, get out, get a job, get a life! This is all within your control. Take responsibility and control of your life and do something.
