A lot depends on what your soldier wants and will use but just about anything that is legal to have in the country can go. Some places do have restrictions and a few of these sites list them as well as ideas on what to send...

Also this is still going on:

As of 25 October 2004 the United States Postal Service is offering free packing materials to family and friends of military members who are deployed overseas (APO or FPO addresses). To take advantage of this service call: 800-610-8734. Once you have the operator on the line, simply ask for the "Military Pack". They will send you free boxes, packing materials, tape and mailing labels. These products are to be used to mail care packages to service members.

Ask him what he wants. They can get all kinds of stuff at the BX so he may not need you to send much at all. My husband is over there right now. He's only ever asked for Body Wash. don't send chocolates, anything that could be considered sexual in anyway, nothing with made from pork. Send handheld games, snacks (beef jerkey, gummies) but don't send too much! I Honestly, he probably doesn't need a package every week. I was going to do that with my husband but they just don't need that much stuff. he said he liked the letters I wrote over the stuff I sent! Anyway, at the end of a long day the last thing my husband wanted to do was hike to the post office and carry back a package. The AF doesn't have much freetime anyway. My hubby works 14 hour days with no days off. EMAIL EMAIL EMAIL. It takes about 3-4 days for thier e-mail to get setup and then you can just write.

Hi
I think the only things you arent allowed to send are dangerous articles. Im ex HM forces and that was the case with the BFPO so its probably the same with the AFPO although I dont advise you sending alcohol as I hear its banned in the US forces!!. Things he might appreciate would be a few photographs, magazines, perhaps a newspaper, maybe some cigars, and definitely sweets and chocolates!!!
all the best and hope this helps

when you send a package you have to fill out a customs form. but you can send just about anything. i send my husband stuff almost every week while he is gone too. Send favorite foods, books, anything he likes, pics are good too. also sometimes the frist packages you send out will be the last one he recieves. I dont know about england but in the us my husbands mail never got opened. they do x-ray it. also a good thing to do is put a card in the package with his address on it , just in case something happens and the packages has to be opened or the outside is damaged and it can be read that way he will still get it.

When i was in afganistan my girlfriend used to send all sorts of little stuff like pictures of her the dog sweets and mags
I was just happy to mail really you could send anything and he'll be happy.
try sending odd things like a small lego set or something so when he opens it he has something to do.
your not really allowed to send mags with have naked girls in (muslim country) but trust me they will never open the mail unless the drug dog likes the smell of it.

Anything you send he will love mail is the best thing ever on det bar the flight home of course.

No pornographic related items, stuff that can be used in the summer like baby wipes, chap stick, OFF bug repelent wipes, a very tough and durable photo album around 4x6 size that can handle alot of moving and packing.
Winter time those little packs that you shake up and massage to generate heat, ice hot patches for achey muscles, dvd payers, game boys, ps2 portable, mp3 payer, a hand held tap recorder with tapes to record messages to you and vice versa and so on

I would ask him, because people send stuff there all the time, plus they have a px/bx there for them to buy the stuff they have to have, such as soap etc.. I like Andy Cap hot fries and when I was there they never stocked up on it ever. That was just horrible. A whole year without Hot fries.
