Everyday. You know if you read 1 chapter a day in 2.5 years you can read the WHOLE bible.

Good question. I admit I didn't used to much at all but now I read about a page a night before I go to sleep. Not much I know but I am amazed how much it helps getting the whole story in context. It's amazing.

You can read spare paragraph occassionally, but not the whole thing!
Now...
For us, catholics, it is NOT essential. While most branches of protestantism believe the Bible is essential, we don't. So... it is not so necessary.
Still, you cannot deny it has many interests, even if it just merely cultural.
