If you are taking vigorous exercise and wish to aim for example at pulse rates of 85% of maximum while exercising, they can be useful Those with chest straps are the most accurate.

If you idly want to know what your pulse is, don't bother take it with your finger at the wrist.

heart monitors monitor more than jhust heart rate they monitor the rhythm wchich tells more than just whether or no tyou have an irregular heart beat. you can go every year or so though to a cardiologist and they can do an ekg to see if you have experinced anything that you should be worried about. I don't think just any joe blow should have a heart monitor. only if you have a cardiac history and know how to read them would they be benificial to you, and they are really expensive

If you're new to exercising they are worth it or if you have a medical condition that requires strict monitoring. I've exercised for over 20 years without one and can tell when I'm too high or low.

Yes I have one and I use it when running. By using it, I discovered I was training way too hard - it has really helped my progress. It isn't a fancy one so I feel it was well worth the investment. I can even use it when I swim too.

not really, if you need to keep track of your heart rate, just take your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4, and see if the rhythm is regular or not. if you need to keep track of it for medical reasons, you might want to get one if your doctor thinks it is a good idea, but for the most part the aren't necessary.

I don't have one but I am a little familiar with them. I got some information from several edu (universitiy sites) to help you.

Are you using it for training for a race or medical condition?
