to live by the golden rule. replace in nature what is lost - as our future generations will continue to live on. take responsibility for your own actions and learn from your mistakes. forgive your enemies. (but don't do it in the name of god or religion) do it for your own spirit and life in the here and now. (This is how my native american ancestors lived in peace)

My children ask me this all the time. They were catholic school kids for years and years and are extremely confused. My answer is explore every option, find what works for your general belief structure and go from there.
Who knows what religion is correct, every religion thinks that is the one you should believe in.
It does not matter what you believe... to anyone other than you and whomever you chose to believe in, as a higher power. But you have to have faith and believe in something, otherwise life is meaningless for the most part.
If that fails, go back to the oldest religions, odds are those are more correct than any offshoots on religion that are more recent.
Also ask yourself a question. If something horrible happened to a family member tomorrow, who would you ask for help from? Who would you immediately pray to without question?

There's just one, really, but it's the most important one:
never blindly take in everything that people say, don't let yourself be led, but USE YOUR OWN HEAD to THINK.
But then again, you know this one already.
